Frequently asked questions about sleepovers:

What days and times are sleepovers held?
Generally sleepovers are on Friday or Saturday nights, however weekday programs are also available.  Sleepovers run from 7 p.m. until 11 a.m. the next morning.

How do I schedule my group for a sleepover?
You can schedule either by calling the zoo education department at 304-243-4068 or by completing the group reservation form found on the Oglebay web site (www.oglebay-resort.com/goodzoo/Sleepover Registration.pdf) or by e-mailing vmarkey@oglebay-resort.com.

When you schedule, please have the date you prefer and the approximate number of people (youth and adult) that will be attending.  A $60 non-refundable deposit is due at the time the sleepover is booked.

What is the cost for the sleepover?
Sleepovers are $28 per youth and $23 per adult.  (Oglebay Good Zoo Members are $23 each.)  One adult is admitted free with every 8 paying youth.  There is a minimum fee of $325.

When do I pay for the sleepover?
A $60 non-refundable deposit is due when the sleepover is booked.  We will not hold dates for groups without a deposit.  The balance is due on the day of your program.  Payments can be made by cash, credit card or check made payable to “Good Zoo.”

When do I need a final attendance count?
The zoo needs a tentative attendance count when booking your program.  In order for the zoo to have the proper amount of food and supplies, it is necessary to have a close count at least one week prior to your program.  You will only be charged for the people attending the program or the minimum fee whichever is higher.

Can siblings or friends attend the sleepover?
Yes, siblings and friends may attend the sleepover.  All youth and adults attending the program must be included your attendance and pay the program fee.

What is included with the sleepover?
For your sleepover you receive Zoo admission, program presented by zoo education and/or Benedum Planetarium staff, guided zoo tour, activity booklet, live animal presentation, train ride (seasonal/weather/facilities permitting), program supplies, pizza (night-time snack), continental breakfast and an Oglebay patch or button.

What food is provided with the sleepover?
The zoo provides a night-time snack of pizza!

Breakfast is continental style and includes a variety of cold and hot cereals, toast, doughnuts, apples, oranges, milk, juice, hot chocolate and coffee/tea (for adults).

The zoo does not provide dinner, so it is advised that participants eat before arriving at the zoo.

Bag lunches are available.  These must be ordered a minimum of 7 days in advance.  The cost is $4 per lunch with a minimum purchase of 10 lunches.  They contain your choice of peanut butter and jelly or turkey sandwich, chips, apple, cookie and juice box.

Can I bring my own food?
Yes, you can bring additional snacks or drinks with you.  Food must be consumed only in designated areas.  The zoo does not have refrigeration space and there are no stoves/ovens available.

Where will my group sleep and what facilities are available?
Groups sleep either in the zoo’s multi-purpose room or planetarium.  Both rooms are carpeted and heated/air conditioned.  Participants are to bring their own sleeping bags/pillow.  Adults may wish to bring an additional sleeping pad since the floors may be a bit hard. Restrooms are accessible throughout the program.  There are no shower facilities.

What if it rains?
Please dress for the weather.  The morning portion of the sleepover is spent touring the zoo, which is primarily outside.  If participants are prepared for bad weather, they will have more fun!  Rain and cool weather does not keep us from our planned zoo tour.  Activities for the evening portion of the program are generally be held indoors.

What do we need to bring with us?
Sleeping bag, pillow, extra blanket if you get cold, sleepwear, toiletries, rain gear, coat/jacket, change of clothes and a camera should be all you need. The zoo prefers that you not bring an excessive number of items with you.  Our lost and found has been piled high with socks, games, radios etc.

Do we need to bring games, movies or other activities for our group?
No, the zoo educator has a full evening and morning of activities for you.  Chaperones will need to actively participate and aid the group in activities, therefore; do not bring TVs, radios, card games etc.

Will my group be combined with another group?
Groups are typically not combined with other groups for the evening portion of the program.  Another group may join your group for snack time, breakfast and the morning tour of the zoo.  The zoo does reserve the right to combine groups.

Do we get a train ride?
The zoo’s train ride is generally available from Easter through Halloween.  A train ride is included with the sleepover programs during this time (weather and facilities permitting.) When provided, the train ride will be given at the end of the sleepover.  Occasionally this will cause the sleepover program to run a few minutes late.

Can we go to the gift shop?
This is entirely up to your group.  The gift shop is not open during the sleepover program but does open by 11 am when the sleepover is ending.  If you wish to visit the gift shop, please allow yourself time after your sleepover is completed.

Do we get to see animals?
Of course you do!  All sleepover programs include a zoo tour and an animal presentation.  The animal presentation is a 45-minutes to 1 hour long section of your program where your group will see up close and even have the chance to touch up to 5 of our education animals.  These animals vary depending on availability, but may include opossums, tortoises, snakes, insects and more.

Do you provide the Girl Scout Patch or Try-it Patch?
Although Girl Scouts will complete the activities necessary to earn their patch, we do not provide the actual patch.  These are available through the Girl Scout Council.  The zoo does provide an Oglebay patch or button for each girl participating in the program.

Where can parents contact their children if there is an emergency?
During the sleepover program, the education staff conducting the program and park security are generally the only people in the zoo building.  They will answer the phone when possible.  This number is 304-243-4068.  If there is an emergency, messages can be left by calling the zoo office at 304-243-4100 or park security at 304-243-4000.
