Academy and OVAC Round-Up

We would like to congratulate all of our players who have been training in the Fall and Winter Junior Academies. Our players did a wonderful job in the OVAC high school tennis season. The Academy would like to recognize from Brooke High School: Jackson Cary, playing number 1 singles, and Ryan Mezan, playing number 2 singles. Both players had a wonderful year and really were the leaders in this year's Academy. Also from Brooke: Cassidy Bland, who worked so hard and always had a smile on her face. Great Job everyone!

Jonathan Haley, Brett Szeligo and Billy Teufel were three academy members who helped Central have some great wins this year. Haley and Szeligo played one of the most exciting double matches at the OVAC championships. These two individuals played inspiring tennis and took the top Morgantown High Team to a nail bitting tie breaker. This experience will help them this summer when they compete in the Oglebay Jr. Championship as they are a doubles team on the move.

St Clairsville has a really nice, young core of players who are guaranteed to make their mark in the next few years. Alan Trouten, Dan Trouten, Chris Baker and freshman, Austin Douglass are definitely players to watch.

Hayden Blazer of John Marshall had a breakout year with his new improved serve and his hard charging style. These qualities helped him in the OVAC championships and took him all the way to the State Championships. Blazer has become the top player in our academy and in the OVAC.

Two of our middle school academy players who have really improved are Jesse Newton and Austin Douglass. Newton, from Washington, PA, is now playing number 1 singles for McGuffy High while Douglass moved up to play number 3 singles for St. Clairsville. Both players have so much natural talent and are shinning academy stars making their mark at the high school level.

Leading the way for the girls from the academy are Jackie McDermott and Emmy Weaver. McDermott, playing number 1 singles and doubles, was the top OVAC girl player with only one loss going into the OVAC championships. She played some inspiring tennis and reached the final where she pushed the number 1 seat from Morgantown to the limit. This was one of the most exciting finals in the OVAC. Weaver played number 3 and had a nice season after recovering from shoulder surgery. She also played very well at the OVAC tournament.

The academy congratulates all these players who trained with us and played so well on their High School OVAC team.

Also, a special congratulations to all the Junior players who have been working hard and improving in our Junior Academy!

Academy Professionals Staff News

Staff stays on the cutting edge of sports education!
Academy Teaching Professional Evan Clifton, received a Master of Science in Athletic Coaching Education from WVU, where he was on staff in the Phs. Ed Dept. coaching tennis. Evan also attended a workshop where he earned his PTR certification for students age 10 & under. Congratulations Evan! Evan will be working here at Oglebay full time this summer where the academy will offer two 10 & under Superstar clinics Tuesdays at 4pm and Saturdays at 11am.

Our academy Director, Jeremy McClelland, who has had a busy year designing programs and writing some new tennis instruction articles, has also been working on his coaching certifications. Coach White is a Level III Professional Ski Instructor of America (PSIA). Recently, White was awarded a Masters Certification in Ski Racing and Advanced Coaching from PSIA. This designation is only given to the highest level III coaches in America who complete and test on extensive ski racing techniques and tactics. White attended the PSIA Masters Certification at the Whiteface Mt. Lake Placid Olympic training center.

In the winter months, the Academy offers the MSW Ski & Tennis Experience which is designed as a cross training vehicle for our academy athletics.

Hope to see everyone at our Tennis Across America play day on June 8 at 10 am. Bring a friend and come out to help us kick off the summer tennis season! You will have fun while learning new skills, meet our staff, PLUS, you will have a chance to win a Head Tennis Racquet. WOW!

To all of the OVAC High School Players, Middle School and Superstars, congratulations for all of your hard work in our Winter Tennis Academy. Don't forget to sign up today for the Oglebay Jr. Classic Championship. The deadline is Friday, June 14 and the tournament begins on Friday, June 21.

Be sure to check all of the exciting tennis events that we have designed for you and your entire family. Make this summer an experience of tennis that is fun, educational and healthy, and watch as we take your game to new heights.
