Academy and OVAC Round-Up
Director of Tennis
We would like to congratulate all of our players who have been training in the Fall and Winter Junior Academies. Our players did a wonderful job in the OVAC high school tennis season. The Academy would like to recognize from Brooke High School: Jackson Cary, playing number 1 singles, and Ryan Mezan, playing number 2 singles. Both players had a wonderful year and really were the leaders in this year's Academy. Also from Brooke: Cassidy Bland, who worked so hard and always had a smile on her face. Great Job everyone!
Jonathan Haley, Brett Szeligo and Billy Teufel were three academy members who helped Central have some great wins this year. Haley and Szeligo played one of the most exciting double matches at the OVAC championships. These two individuals played inspiring tennis and took the top Morgantown High Team to a nail bitting tie breaker. This experience will help them this summer when they compete in the Oglebay Jr. Championship as they are a doubles team on the move.
St Clairsville has a really nice, young core of players who are guaranteed to make their mark in the next few years. Alan Trouten, Dan Trouten, Chris Baker and freshman, Austin Douglass are definitely players to watch.
Hayden Blazer of John Marshall had a breakout year with his new improved serve and his hard charging style. These qualities helped him in the OVAC championships and took him all the way to the State Championships. Blazer has become the top player in our academy and in the OVAC.
Two of our middle school academy players who have really improved are Jesse Newton and Austin Douglass. Newton, from Washington, PA, is now playing number 1 singles for McGuffy High while Douglass moved up to play number 3 singles for St. Clairsville. Both players have so much natural talent and are shinning academy stars making their mark at the high school level.
Leading the way for the girls from the academy are Jackie McDermott and Emmy Weaver. McDermott, playing number 1 singles and doubles, was the top OVAC girl player with only one loss going into the OVAC championships. She played some inspiring tennis and reached the final where she pushed the number 1 seat from Morgantown to the limit. This was one of the most exciting finals in the OVAC. Weaver played number 3 and had a nice season after recovering from shoulder surgery. She also played very well at the OVAC tournament.
The academy congratulates all these players who trained with us and played so well on their High School OVAC team.
Also, a special congratulations to all the Junior players who have been working hard and improving in our Junior Academy!
